When I started researching folding bikes several years ago I knew very little about them.
I liked how compact and convenient they could be but I didn’t really know how they compared to a regular bike.
I wasn’t sure how they differed besides the fact that of course they can fold up into a small package.
I have learned a lot since then and I now know all of the pros and cons.
I think they are important to know before purchasing a folding bicycle so that you can make an informed choice and decided if it will suit your needs and your lifestyle well.
Folding Bike Pros
Compact
One of the main reasons that most people consider a folding bike in the first place is because of their compact nature.
They fold up into a small package that can be stored in a storage bag.
They can be stored in a closet or in any smaller area. They take up very little space.
For this reason they are ideal for condo dwellers or for storing in any room where extra space is an issue.
The size of the bike when folded up depends on the size of the frame and the wheels. Some are larger than others.
It is possible to get a smaller frame as well as small wheels if a super compact package is what you are looking for.
Easy To Transport
In my opinion this is one of the biggest advantages to a folding bike. You can transport it anywhere.
It can easily be taken on an airplane and used while on vacation.
It is perfect for storing on a boat to be used when docked at shore.
It is ideal for storing in an RV or even in the trunk of your car.
It is also very easy to take it on the bus, subway or metro.
There is no need for a bike rack or extra tools and it can literally be enjoyed anywhere you want to go.
Quality
This was my biggest question when I first decided to buy a folding bike. How durable are they? How does their quality compare to a regular bike?
I have since learned that very similar to a regular bicycle, the quality can differ greatly.
As with most things, you are going to get what you pay for. A cheaper folding bike is going to be comparable in quality to a cheaper regular bike.
However there are excellent quality bikes available that are extremely durable yet still lightweight and compact.
A little research into the good brands and the components will tell you a lot.
How much you spend will depend on your needs and how much you will be using the bike.
In my experience it is very possible to get a great bike at a good price. Although typically the higher the price the better the bike… It is not always necessary to go for that Ferrari.
There are good, dependable, well made foldable bikes out there that are a great buy.
Security
Security with bicycles is always a huge issue. They get stolen often. It is such a constant complain and concern and unfortunately there is not much you can do if someone really wants to take your bike.
Leaving it in a public space leaves it vulnerable to be taken.
What I absolutely love about folding bikes is that they can be folded up so easily and quickly and consequently taken inside with you wherever you go.
If you are commuting by bike to work or even just around town to run errands, you no longer have to leave your bike vulnerable and exposed outside.
You can fold it up in seconds and take it with you wherever you are.
Folding Bicycle Cons
As with any product there are negatives to be aware of as well. Whether or not the pros outweigh the negatives for you will depend on your needs.
Weight
Although not always the case, often a folding bike will be a little heavier. The extra hinges can add weight that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.
However from the bikes I have seen it seems that the better quality models are typically lighter.
As with a regular bike you pay for that lightweight and convenience.
Make sure to note the weights of the bikes you are looking at. They can vary significantly.
Stiffness
In general they will not be as stiff as a good regular bike.
I wasn’t surprised at this negative as it makes total since considering they are not one solid piece.
The stiffness can vary however but as a general rule you can count on it not being quite as stiff as you might be used to.
That being said they are certainly not wobbly or loose feeling. Just not quite as stiff as a solid frame.
Bumpier
Wheel size can differ and it is something to be aware of. You may want the smaller wheels for ultra portability but it is important to be aware that the smaller wheels usually mean a bumpier ride.
I don’t find them to be annoyingly bumpy but it also greatly depends on the type of terrain you are biking on.
Price
The price range can vary greatly but you may end up paying a little more than you would have for a comparable regular bike – possibly but not definitely.
If you are finding them pricey keep in mind the cash you will save on renting bikes if you are vacationing, taxis or gas if you are choosing it for commuting and even on storage and tools.
I find the prices reasonable all things considered but again it will depend on your needs.
Weighing the Pros and Cons
Hopefully weighing these pros and cons will help you to make a more informed decision.
Folding bikes have come a long way and I find I see them more and more everywhere I go.
Biking is a huge industry and foldable bikes fill a niche that just keeps on growing. Consequently the quality, value and options keep growing as well.
